I love the gothic subculture, and I find it intelligent, elegant etc.

But theres one argument to goth that I Just cant make sense out of, and its kind of silly.

Its: 'Goth is not something you become. Its something you are'.

Yet, this is, imo, a bit controversial. Because goth is music based, atleast according most goths Ive met. Theres some disagreement over this, but basically lets just say that the music is the foundation as part of a goth identity- how can we say that someone doesnt become goth?

Oh, I don't even get into this sort of discussion anymore (for YEARS).

(I'm not sure I even understand the O.P. Question, I guess)

Long ago, I realized that discussing/debating Punk, Goth, STAR TREK, Vampires, Rap, Law, and even Skills/Trades Methods are eventually often no different than obliviously-moralizing and endlessly-intellectualizing Religion and Politics...tragically.

But although I guess sometimes I myself may even find so-called Goth GateKeepers annoying and even a bit overbearing (I actually used to be one of them, but I'm glad that Legitimate Gatekeepers are still there) I still understand that they still DO have A Real Legitimate Important Duty To Do. Yes.

For what it's worth, I found this (because I certainly am NOT the best at making myself clear):

Nothing wrong with being goth, but thats one I cant understand. Sure, we are born with certain characteristics. And perhaps some people have a Characteristics that makes them more prone to liking horror movies and such.

Yet, if we are going to say that goth is a lifestyle, as goths oftentimes likes to claim, and that its based on fashion and music, etc, where you cannot self identify as goth wo the music, than I do think its reasonable to say that its a choice. But its a choice based what you already like, or what attracts you.

Than, of course, goth isnt the only subculture with fascination for the macabre, and people have been interested in darker things for centuries.

Than again, Aurelio Voltaire is reputed for saying 'goth is whatever you want it to be', which, to me sounds kind of silly, but IDK wether thats Just hes sense of humour or whatever, as I havent read The book

In this crazy world we are now stuck in, people tend to use the excuse "born that way" as an opt out for taking responsibility for their personal choices. They will act like it's somehow in their genes. Asking questions will get you labelled anything from Trans Phobic to Goth Phobic (I just made that up).

I'm bored with the way snowflakes and libtards act these days. 🦊

I have to agree with this wholeheartedly. It’s worse when they use the status they were “born with” to dodge consequences.

Thank you. Just imagine how many killers could be forgiven if they said they couldn't help themselves. They were born to kill. It's bad enough many blame their childhood. My childhood was terrible, nut I don't go out kill start killing women who remind me of my mother. 🦊

I dont think anyone is born to kill. Thats why we have the criminal justice system. Because people can make the decision not to, unless they are severly out of touch with reality.

I believe that people may be born with certain traits Where they are more prone to violent acts, though.
